So the plan carried on, and, in a few days time, they all took turns at keeping watch until midnight. When it was midnight, Sophie, who was on watch at the time, shook everybody until they woke up, still half asleep. They pulled, pushed, shoved, until they were all puffed out. But it was no use - the piece of wood wouldn't budge! The harder they pulled, or pushed, the less the piece of wood would move! So they had to leave that plan!
It a few weeks time, when they were all bored with darkness, all bored with observing the cave outside them through the hole in their 'door', they held another meeting. It was Sophie's turn, so she thought a moment and they launched into her speech:
"Well . . . as we know, we can't move the plank . . ."
"Go on!" murmured the others in excitemint, but Chris didn't look as happy as the others.
"But Fifo has to move it to give us our food, and as tomorrow is Sunday, we'll have mashed potato. One of us can pretend to trip, bump Fifo, and make him drop our food. If I'm correct, the mashed potato will slide down the slope, and if we grab a sausage, we can use it as a sledge," she continued. "Well, what do you think?"
Every one apart from Chris nodded in agreement.
"B . . . b . . . b . . . but . . .!" stammered Chris.
But, yet again, no-one noticed.
A few hours later and it was time for their lunch, and so as soon as Fifo opened the 'door', Jane tripped over . . . and missed him completely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, much to their disappointment, they ate their meals as normal that day.
