It was quite a mistake that Alan found the metal trapdoor. It was quite a mistake that fearless Chris opened it. It was certainly a mistake that they all followed poor Sophie when she fell into the deep hole, screaming. All a mistake. A big mistake.
And now they were all stuck in the gloomy everlasting passageway that lay out in front of them with Sophie and Jane crying!
It had all started when they had gone to the normal Isle of Wight for their summer holiday, instead of sunny California. They where staying in a large holiday house with a garden that stretched out for miles on end! They had to admit, it was pretty exciting!
They had been searching the gigantic garden for twigs so that they could sleep in a home made den that night. Alan had been round the garden quite a few times looking for branches that he could use when, Alan, saw a glint. A silver glint. It was so rusty, and so dusty, that you could hardly see the difference between it and the wide, wooden plank that was attached to it! It reminded him of something. If only he could remember . . . He looked back to see were the others where, and saw the door to the kitchen that always smelt of cakes.
"Of course!" he breathed. "The door! It looks just like this thing here! Hey! You lot! Come and see!"
He had found the door. And when Chris opened the door, Sophie fell in to the deep, black hole. They were all so frightened, that they all followed. And they landed with a soft THUD!
"Oh well. Let's see where the tunnel leads to," sighed Alan.
They started to walk. It was dark, and gloomy, and Sophie started to sob.
"Shut up Sophie! It's an adventure!" commanded Chris, glad to be able to boss his older sister.
The walls were wet with slime and no one dared touch them. The children carried on walking, cautiously. They only noticed more signs of life in the sandy place when they found a huge room with huge furniture . . . and a huge smell of food as well! The room was amazing, like a cathedral, a school hall, and a dirty cave all thrown in together!
"Um, I've just realised how hungry I am," whined Sophie.
"So have I," agreed Jane. "Why don't you boys go and try to climb onto the table and pinch a handful of whatever is there. It should be quite easy."
So the boys tried and tried to climb up first the leg of the table that was the size of thir house, and then the chair the size of a whole room! But try as hard as they could, they could not climb what felt like wet glass!
Then, the noise started. "THUD!! THUD!!" It sounded like . . . well . . . giant footsteps, coming into the room! The children all fled to hide but they were too late - the giant had seen them!
